I agree with your statement about questioning.  As you and the students progress through a concept, it is the responsibility of the teacher to check for understanding.  Also allow students to share their thoughts throughout a lesson with their peers.  Students learn quite a bit from one another and can have a discussion to help expand their knowledge on a concept/s.
