Take a bit of time to reflect on your own experience with learning Science. What do you remember most about the Science instruction you had?

When I was growing up I don't recall doing much Science until I got to middle school and high school. However,  the courses i remember most fondly are the ones where the teacher was genuinely interested in the subject, encouraged student interaction and my teachers were able to take foundational concepts and explain them in understandable way with real life examples.  For example, being taught how gravity is a force and then shown a comparison of free falling objects for illustration such as dropping a TV from the roof of a school building.

What do you remember fondly?

I remember going to the Griffith Observatory and and I also remember learning about the PH scale and did tested different types of liquids to test if they were acid or base. In high school, I mainly remember dissecting a fish. I really enjoyed the hands-on learning we did in class.

What do you recall that was less than enjoyable? As I mentioned above, I don't recall doing much Science because it was mainly learning from a textbook, taking notes, packets, tests, etc, which is why I don't remember much of it and because of that I didn't have much interest in Science.

What impact has this had on your own teaching?

I teach lower elementary and as a result of my own learning experience with Science, I have used the textbook less, have the students create Science notebooks, and do more hands-on learning with projects and experiments.
