Despite so much criticism, chess is a sport and chess is recognized by the international Olympic committee. There's many reasons for this. Some people think chess is a less physical activity sport but it is not true, chess requires a loss of physical and mental toughness because chess games can last for hours whereas other sports end in 1 to 1.5 hours.
