3-LS1-1. Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in
common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.
SEP - Developing models might include creating life cycle patterns for both animals and plants. During the discussion, we would want to look at how all plants and animals go through similar parts of their life cycles. We would also discuss what would happen if one part of the cycle were interrupted and how that might affect future members of that group.
DCI - LS1.B: Growth and Development of Organisms. This is a hard one for me in 3rd grade, because I don't want to get into the idea of human reproduction at this age! When we have covered this part of the standard, we have discussed that all organisms have to have babies to continue to be part of the world. We do not get into how reproduction happens. This is honestly one of my least favorite standards for 3rd graders because I don't feel like it is my place to put this idea into their heads.
CCC - Patterns - We spend a lot of time looking at patterns in life cycles when we are studying this standard. The kids understand patterns and are able to see how we can predict different parts of plant/animal life by looking at the patterns.
