What can exploring art do for enhancing and developing career skills?

A teacher’s professional competency and practice can be enhanced by exploring art. It demonstrates their ability to creatively differentiate lessons and assessments for students of varying abilities.

What types of technologies have you used that share a link with art? Include at least one link to a technology that could be used in the classroom.

One technology I used when I taught preschool was to show videos of animals walking in a line to demonstrate the concept of walking in a line. The majority of my students were English Language Learners.  In the upper grades, I’ve used apps that help a student digitally tell a story. Many times students feel bogged down with writing out a whole story, but when it is broken up into segments or graphic novel organization they are able to break the task into manageable chunks as opposed to paragraphs. Canva is a program that has such, as well as, StoryBoard That. Storyboard That has pre designed backgrounds and characters that enable a student to create a visual and then create the story.

What are your "takeaways" from the article and videos?

The key takeaways from the videos and the article is that art helps students communicate knowledge and ideas. It is a medium that is accessible to all and builds students self confidence, self esteem, and self efficacy. It helps them communicate what they may find challenging in traditional displays of written examples. Art engages students by capturing and holding their attention in an individualized manner. The example of the 2 videos by Reading Rocks show how students use art as a bridge for communication by using characters as a mode of their voice to a teacher when dealing with classroom struggles. Their video aptly showed they felt like zeros prior to sharing how they felt and that the expression of their feeling made them feel like they were able to constructively use their voice. Ben’s video demonstrated his difficulty in processing 2 dimensional information. His struggle led him to decreased motivation. The three dimensional aspect of his video helped him to stay motivated and have successful attempts.
One of the most important aspects I found was that teachers need professional development and support to grasp all the technologies they encounter and the variety of learners.
