Assignment 9 BAL

Rebecca Bal
What can exploring art do for enhancing and developing career skills?
I think that these days we are so pushed to focus on math and reading, that we forget the purpose of education is to prepare children for the future, and with that, to prepare them to be productive contributing members of society. Two ways that art can help with career skills (thus making helping these students learn to contribute) is first by making them feel good about themselves and their thought process and second by making them more creative. Art helps people to feel good about themselves and to have good self esteem because there is no right or wrong and everyone's ideas and finished product in art is to be valued. Many of our students need more of these experiences in school that make them feel smart and valued and less experiences that tell them they are inadequate. In addition, I sometimes fear that we are creating robots who all think and do the same. Our society needs people who are creative and who can think for themselves, thus solving unique problems. This could be in politics, building things, in science fields, and more. Art prepares our students for future careers and other aspects of adult life in many ways.

What types of technologies have you used that shares a link with art? Include at least one link to a technology that could be used in the classroom.
One thing that I have used a lot of is digital presentations and photography. These two pieces of technology require students to use artistics skills and can be easily incorporated into any core subject. I do not have a specific website that I would recommend over the other for presentations and photography, there are a variety of them and they are easy to find. Some of the common ones are powerpoint, photo editors, and prezi.

What are your "takeaways" from the article and videos?
The best thing I took away from these article and videos are how beneficial art is to students self esteem and also how art technology can help students with disabilities be more involved and to express themselves. The author in “Integrating Arts with Technology” said that “For students with disabilities in particular, the opportunity to be self-expressive and successful in an artistic medium can often diffuse or transcend the sense of isolation and frustration they may feel when working with their disability in daily life.” He later explains that art technology has such an effect on student self esteem and enjoyment in schools that it has been known to decrease the dropout rate. These two statements alone are enough to explain to anyway why art is a necessary component in the classroom.
