Assignment #9 - Rob Kinzenbaw

Robert Kinzenbaw
What can exploring art do for enhancing and developing career skills?

I have a fortunate experience of having a 10 year career in agri-business, prior to becoming a teacher.  I can speak first hand that art and design benefited me greatly.  The arts education can not only teach design and aesthetics that apply to creating multimedia presentations (PowerPoint) that help to deliver an effective presentation, but drama also benefits the confidence of presentations.  All too often I would sit through presentations where the layout of the PPT was erratic, without a focus, theme was missing, or poor color choice was used.  All of this took away from the message.  Thinking outside of the box has also been mentioned, and this is something that benefits service technicians that perform trouble shooting all the way up to design engineers and marketing managers.  There is no doubt in my mind that art greatly benefits the career readiness our students.  Critiquing art in VTS is something that allows future professionals to analyze their products before a new product launch, even before market testing.

What types of technologies have you used that shares a link with art? Include at least one link to a technology that could be used in the classroom.

I will admit that this is an area where I am lacking, but one such website that comes to mind (not technology per se) is www.artforkidshub.com I use this website at various times through the year.  The website is all "how to draw" videos of a farther (cartoonist) and his son drawing everything from pop culture to characters to seasonal activities.  I like to do a whole class drawing (same guided lesson) and then display our work on the walls.  It is fun to see the differences and hear how amazed the students are with their artwork.  I also use this site with a figurative language unit that I do centered around "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"  There is an activity that the students complete (writing) and then we all draw the Grinch to display with our work in the halls.  Lastly, this is my go to indoor recess activity, the kids love to draw to the videos when the weather is bad.

https://classroom.google.com/  Using Google classroom is a new idea that has come to me with the use of VTS in mind.  I want to post artwork in the classroom feed and have students respond to the same VTS questioning in a digital discussion format.

What are your "takeaways" from the article and videos?

Drawing or creating art to music was my takeaway, or something that I want to research and attempt in the classroom.  From having used artforkidshub.com I know how much my students like to draw, but I want to see how music can change what they draw.  I would like to get away from the guided lesson and have them draw what they feel from the music.  I think that a VTS style discussion of a song, which ties into the CCSS standards for poetry would tie in really well.  After having analyzed a song and studied the emotions I would challenge them to "DRAW" or "PAINT" the song.
