MY LEARNING PATHWAY

Outcome:

• I will increase my awareness of personalized learning so that I understand the basic elements, and can identify elements of personalized learning in a classroom.
• I will modify our school’s AP time to offer personalized learning to a select group of 6th graders.

Resources:

I really entered this class clueless to what “personal learning” so I need to continue to work through the personal learning pathway that you are offering. I started at the beginning level because that is truly where I am. I was intrigued by the “genius hour” that I read about so I would like to delve into that more. I have made a contact who does “Genius Hour” so I am planning on picking his brain.
I think I have chosen the right path for myself because it is addressing both my strengths and weaknesses. First just taking an on-line class is addressing my biggest weakness, technology. For example, creating my Symbaloo account turned into a two hour ordeal because when I signed in the account was in Turkish. I couldn’t even read the words so I went to a teacher who is pretty tech savvy, she couldn’t help. The GWAEA tech consultant just happened to be in our tech office when I went there for help but she couldn’t fix it either. This may seem funny to some people (the first teacher I asked was loving trying to fix the problem) but to me I was so frustrated and anxious that I wanted to cry. The only funny thing in this situation was that I came up with the solution. With our tech director’s fifty computers (that’s a bit of an exaggeration) we logged on as a different user then read the English version and clicked on my Turkish screen simultaneously until we could find how to change the language. By the way, I never even selected a language when I logged on so no one could explain to me why my account was in Turkish. So you see the format of this class is helping me. Working to implement personalized learning into my current setting will address my strength, which as you see from my Symbaloo debacle is problem solving.

        Artifact:

• I am going to create a personalized learning opportunity during AP time. My artifact will be to describe the environment we create and tell what the kids choose to learn.

AP is a twenty-five minute period at the end of the day where we service student who need Additional Practice to master skills. I also have to teach a reading group every third week during this time. Our students who do not need AP spend that time in our auditorium reading, playing computer games, or doing homework. You can guess which option the majority of our students choose. I know for me I need to start small because I will still have to service my AP kids so I will select three students who I think are mature, self-motivated learners.

Thanks for having the patience and tenacity to work through this course. As we mentioned in the beginning this class we are attempting to provide a personalized learning experience for participants who are learning about personalized learning. Bottom line is that this course different than a "traditional" online course so keep asking questions.

Your AP time seems ripe with personalized learning opportunity potential. You have the time to meet with them on a regular basis to work through many of the components of personalized learning. I am excited to read about what your students choose to learn about and how they choose to go about it.
