Discussion for Assignment 9 Dana Wright

Dana Wright
1.What can exploring art do for enhancing and developing career skills?

Art exploration encourages out of the box thinking. When students are allowed to plan and try their own ideas, they tend to have more ownership over the learning. When students feel invested in the learning, more transfer happens for flexible and long term acquisition. Many employers seek creative individuals with problem solving skills. Art exploration is a lot of trial and error. Students learn to consider multiple perspectives and be resilient when things don't go as planned. These skills are desired in the workplace.

2. What types of technologies have you used that shares a link with art? Include at least one link to a technology that could be used in the classroom.

I use ST Math in my classroom. This is a very visual format for teaching math concepts. Students who are struggling with more traditional methods of teaching math, seem to gain more understanding when they are given visual representations. Prezi is also a fun tool. Students use Prezi to share their learning in a visually stimulating way. Students enjoy the design aspect of Prezi. https://prezi.com/explore/education/

3.What are your "takeaways" from the article and videos?

My biggest takeaway is that art is an instructional medium through which we can reach some of our most challenging students. It broke my heart to hear the little girl's testimony about her learning disability in the video about the students learning the art of animation. Art exploration gave this student the confidence she needed to persevere through her struggles. By making the film, the students provided perspective for teachers and other students about how it felt to have a learning disability. This just reinforced for me how important it is to provide multiple opportunities for students to show their learning and express their individuals talents. I also connected with the child learning to blend sounds in words. My own daughter struggles with this. She is sensitive and gets anxious when asked to perform in large groups. Having a nonthreatening learning environment with adequate supports in place has made all the difference for her.

I love letting my students experiment and explore Prezi design as well.  I use it a lot in social studies, allowing students to create and share information on specific topics we are studying.

Dana, I enjoy ST Math also as it allows students to approach math from the problem solving and reasoning side.  It doesn't use any words, reading, or listening.  In fact the "ST" in the name stands for spacial-temporal, the very things that art education benefits in regards to mathematics.
