I have had a Facebook account for over a decade now as it came out when I was a sophomore in college. I use it on a personal level to connect with family and friends. I keep my information and profile very private. So private that if someone has similar settings as me, we actually can't friend each other.
I will admit that this is one area of social media that I struggle to see a strong connection with work to. That might be because when it was set up for me, it was pretty much used only as a personal social media site. I have seen some groups from my school district set up.
Some of these are a general school district page and others are more specific to a club. I do think that this is helpful. For example, being able to post on the district page if there are delays or cancelations due to weather. Individual sports or clubs letting members know about meetings or start times all make sense.
Facebook is interesting to me, because again, everyone had it when I was in college. The high schoolers who I teach have told me that they rarely use it and see it as a place for family or 'older' people to use and rarely go on it. Which again, is so odd to me because I check it daily, often more than once. The reason I bring this up is because if it is being used as a site to put out notifications about the school, it would be very useful to parents who might not be in the 'loop' with what their kids are doing. I don't know if it's the best site though to update students on info based on little they seem to check it.
