I have been using Facebook for many years. In that time, I have followed some groups and also created others. Most of the groups I follow are personal in nature - our church youth group, our community theatre, my high school and college reunion classes.
From an educational standpoint, I have found the creation of a Facebook group to be a very effective means to an end. I have been involved for several years with Scouting. At one point I did find a free website tool to use to create a website for our Pack. However, our needs were not compatible with the website. As a means of sharing pictures from Pack events, I created a Facebook group for our pack. We were able to create privacy settings such that only those with boys in the group could see the page. This helped to protect identities as well as pictures. The same is true for my daughter's Girl Scout troop.
As my children have become older and entered high school, I find Facebook to be invaluable in the information that is shared. In addition, many of the organizations I am part of for my volunteer work communicate through Facebook. I am the Chorus Booster President this year. We are able to share pictures and messages. The best thing is that this links up with other social media as well so that Facebook posts are shared via Twitter to reach a wider audience.
I have a friend who has 3 boys with reading and processing disorders. She has been able to connect with a wider community for support in these issues.
