There are millions of facebook pages, and if you're interested in it, there's probably at least one page about it. Aside from finding old friends and classmates, distant relatives and people with common interests, you can find facebook pages for businesses you patronize. Some businesses use their fb page to advertise specials, clue members/customers in to special events, and send out regular informational updates. I maintain a page for our towing company, where we mostly just try to keep our name out there. Where you turn up in google searches as a business is largely dependent on how many times your name pops up elsewhere on the web, so businesses use activity in twitter, facebook, instagram, etc. to keep their name popping up so they are near the top when someone searches facebook for their business or product.
When my kids were little, I made them add me as friends besides having their login info. This helped me keep track of their activities on facebook.
Also, I recommend if you're a parent or just involved in your local school district, follow their page so that you are kept abreast of any events or other pieces of information that might be good to have.
