What can exploring art do for enhancing and developing career skills?
At its core, art is creativity. Artists consume, interpret, recreate, evaluate, reinvent, permute, and invert among many other metacognitive skills. In the 21st century workplace, workers are increasingly called upon to perform “knowledge work”- or working with ideas rather than materials. While it’s necessary for any great artist to have mastery over their medium, the real art is born of the realm of ideas. By learning how great artists manipulate ideas and practicing being creative in a pure form- people can learn to contribute the kind of careful, original content that the modern workplace seeks and rewards. In the same way that math and reading are included in any curriculum to develop students’ ability to see forms- art helps students to develop their ability to process information through their own unique experience of self.

What types of technologies have you used that shares a link with art? Include at least one link to a technology that could be used in the classroom.

For a Christmas project, I had my students perform dramatic readings of the nativity story. I recorded each student using audacity and students got to experience what it would be like to be in a recording studio. I used professional microphones and headphones and students had to reread their excerpts to get them as perfect as possible. After the recording process, I set their readings to music and different artistic depictions of the nativity and sent the completed video to their parents.
What are your "takeaways" from the article and videos?
Art serves as an alternative avenue to self-expression for students who may have disabilities that disallow them from expressing themselves through written or spoken language. Art expands the medium through which students can make themselves understood as humans to their teachers and classmates and deepens and widens the occasion for humanization in classrooms. Furthermore, this self-expression through art doesn’t act as a crutch or distraction from the aims of school but actually strengthens the core skills that will benefit students for their careers and lives.
