Exploring art can emphasize and teach students important skills that transfer and develop into employability skills. These skills include critical thinking, the ability to analyze complex ideas, think imaginatively, come up with creative solutions to problems, communicate with others and approach work objectively. Through the arts students learn problem solving skills, organization, observation, and self-discipline. Children are able to connect to themselves and their peers through artistic expression. In my classroom I use various forms of low level and high level technology. We use basic art materials; paper, markers, glue, paint, paint brushes, etc. I like to pair low level art technology with higher level. Students will do a listen to reading activity on the iPad (I like to use Epic) and then create in their writing journal or using art supplies. Many times students build on the story they listened to by drawing themselves in a scene, or changing the ending of the story through art. I have an inFocus tv/whiteboard projector in my classroom. It can be used as a tv, projector, and white board. My students love to draw using the pens or the touch screen capability. I have the ability to save documents to the device, so we can draw or create what we think we know, and then open our saved file and add to it based on what we've learned. Its a fun differentiation of a KWL chart in a way that my students with learning disabilities are able to manipulate and connect to. In social skills I frequently use music to act out feelings and social interactions that go with our lessons. We use cd player, music from the computer, or create our own music using instruments. I was really able to connect with this section as the initial readings discussed the impact that integrating art can have for students with disabilities, especially those on alternate assessment. The arts are an integral way of helping those students connect to material, and make the most of the learning experience; as well as giving them the best outlet possible to show what they know.
