New Facebook Security Features

Elise Callahan
I have always known that you need to watch what you share online and that you should use the features that social networking sites offer to help protect your information.  I had gotten lax though and hadn't checked my Facebook settings in awhile and was really surprised by how many new things they've added that you can change the privacy settings on.   One setting I was happy to see was the linking from search engines to your facebook page.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile?
When this setting is on, search engines may link to your profile in their results.
When this setting is off, search engines will stop linking to your profile, but this may take some time. Your profile can still be found on Facebook if people search for your name.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

So I've learned I need to keep checking these privacy-type settings to be sure I'm taking advantage of any new tools that have been added.    :-)

I hadn't checked mine in awhile either....  my phone number was available to the public so I quickly changed it to Friends.  I didn't realize that settings had been added.  I wish there was a way to secure my account so that only Friends could see photos.

I saw some of the new features as well.  I also changed my phone number on how it is viewed and am going to check the settings more often to see what has changed.

Beware the background photo...

Wendy Luedeman
Also---I would like to add, there is no way to set your background photo to "private."  I noticed that a photo of my infant daughter that I had used as a background photo on my account had been "shared" by someone and I was unable to see who it was.  This is because it is someone outside of my network...

Long-story-short, through word of mouth, I found out that the photo had been shared by a 'friend of a friend' and shared with my husband's ex-wife who was curious about our new baby.   Harmless in this case, but yikes.

I tried to set everything to private, but this is not possible for your background photo--they are always public.

You all got me double checking what I have already done.  With so many new features coming out to make each social media platform better for users, who has time to keep up? I guess we should make time.  This is the only way to keep ourselves safe out in cyber world.  This has been an informative and eye opening discussion.  Thanks!
