Norms and Responsibilities

Emily Lofgren
As students are given the privilege of using digital technology in school, regular digital citizenship education should be part of the school curriculum. Even in elementary school, as students use classroom computers or tablets, there should be age-appropriate education on how to use the technology the right way. As students are given access to individual computers to use in upper grades, a Digital Citizenship class should be taken before they have the privilege of taking the computers home to use. Teaching best practices for use of technology should be a norm in our schools. Students need to understand the great responsibility they have in having access to digital resources.

I agree with your thought that digital technology is a privilege.  I also think that most schools to push for regular digital citizenship education in the curriculum.  Really as educators that use technology almost daily, how could we not?  I agree they need to show they are responsible enough to use the computer using best practices, but should the parents be part of this process as well?  The parents are important stakeholders in the process of improving digital citizenship as well.

Every student in our district receives a Chromebook.  Some students in our district don't have wi-fi.  When they can unlock the abilities of a Chromebook at school, learning at times takes a back seat and trying to engage students can become extremely difficult.

I can see what you mean about the learning with the device taking a back seat to them. I have seen the students who only had access to wifi at school, using their devices inappropriately because that is the only time that they have the ability to use them. That is a true struggle! Tough to manage!
