Planning Portugal trip, need car rental advice

Maruschak
I'm planning to spend my vacation in Portugal this year. Want to relax on the Atlantic coast in May and check out medieval architecture in different cities across the country. For getting between them I'll need a car. What type of vehicle works best for local roads there? And where should I look for reliable rentals?

Nice, May is a great time to go before it gets crazy hot and packed with tourists. The thing with those old towns is the streets are stupidly narrow. You'll be squeezing through alleys where you can practically touch both walls at the same time. Definitely grab something small and easy to maneuver, otherwise parking alone will ruin your day. Also heads up, most cars there are manual and getting an automatic means paying way more. Gas costs pile up fast when you're driving all over the place, so factor that in. One more thing, your credit card might already cover rental insurance for Europe, worth checking before you shell out extra cash at the counter.

Medieval architecture sounds sick, those castles and old fortresses are worth the drive between cities for sure. Renting from actual owners works out cheaper and you deal with real people who give a shit about their vehicle. Each one has their own setup though, so terms vary depending on who you book with. Check where you can rent a car in Portugal here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/portugal . You'll find listings from private owners in different cities with their exact rates and conditions laid out. Reviews tell you if they're straight shooters or flaky, and you can message them directly to sort out details before committing.
