Post 5: Assignment 9 Lisa Leroux

What can exploring arts do for enhancing and developing career skills?  Delving into the arts broadens your awareness of your abilities and widens interests.  It also helps your creative skills in life to find solutions to everyday problems.  I personally attended three different high schools growing up and never took an art class.  In college, I discovered a love for art. I have enhanced my teaching career with doing commission art work, interior design, and community theater.  I am passionate about each child finding that spark in them that enriches his/her life.
What types of technology have I used that shares a link with art?  I have never been one to be in front of the audience, but did find a use for my English Language Arts talents by writing plays for my classes.  The students enjoyed acting while I used imovie to put together the scenes that we filmed.  Blogging about the art projects and different themes that we study is a way to let the parents in on their child's day as well.
My takeaways from the articles were numerous.  Getting to know the students and taking an individual interest in them is key. Setting boundaries and rules are a good practice of proactive discipline.  Having the students participate in classroom rules can be very effective. Every good classroom should have procedures that are well thought out and practiced from the beginning.  This gives stability and consistency to the classroom and makes for a positive outcome.  I really enjoyed the "Broken Record" technique instead of getting into a power struggle with a student.  Kids need an advocate. Reading/academics can be helped and enhanced by my art classes.  I can give confidence, or more poker chips, to each student by investing in them some appropriate and sincere praise.

I found that many students who did not fully engage in class were receptive to reader's theater. they were able to more readily use a specific dialect or engage as a character when it was purposeful to do so as opposed to doing it on the fly when reading aloud from a text or novel.
