In order to pre-assess my students, I will brainstorm them about the scientific topics that I hope to teach. I will also utilize charts such as the KWL chart paying more attention on the sections where they will write what they already know and what the hope to know. Journaling is also an effective way for students to be able to share their preconceptions about a topic. Also, purposely utilizing other content areas or subjects to draw out students' preconceptions about scientific content to be taught. I think also it would be good to plan sufficient time for students to discuss their ideas among themselves allowing for a preassessment of their perceptions.
