Preassessing students science knowledge

I find that preassessments should vary and allow the kids different opportunities to share.  I like to have the kids do role-playing and have mini-scientific arguments in the upper elementary grades.  This can include having the kids write a quick paragraph showing their ideas, create visual representations, or make quick models.
