Rights and Responsibilities

Dorothy D
I work with different school districts.  Some of them have a high percentage of students who have internet access outside of school; other districts have a much lower percentage...or...the only internet access is on Mom or Dad's smartphone.  So...students have a right to access/be online.  Level the playing field.  High speed internet accessible for all.

I also believe students have a right to express themselves in this format as they do in other formats.  Of course, with this right comes responsibility...the responsibility to keep your own information secure; the responsibility to treat others appropriately online...just as we would teach/model this behavior for our students/children in "the real world".

Not infringing on the rights of others particularly includes appropriately using the original...perhaps copyrighted...material  of others.   Soooo easy to do this online without stopping to think that it is unethical and illegal in most cases.   More information/practice on copyright/fair use guidelines needs to be shared...music...ebooks...so accessible...teach (and model) what is appropriate!

Good points on copyright.  We don't even realize how much copyrighting infringement takes place.  It is so easy to copy and paste things with our technology!

Access to the digital world makes it so easy to violate copyright.  I hear all too often, "everyone does it" and do we ever hear of anyone we know actually getting caught?  It comes down to teaching others to respect someone else's property, ideas, etc. not because we might get caught, but because it is a matter of being responsible doing what is right.
