Rights and Responsibilities

mandersen
I believe Internet users have the right to communicate information, collaborate on projects and search for information. Along with this right comes the responsibility of the user to participate in these activities in a safe and responsible manner.  This is why I believe digital citizenship skills should be taught to all students so that they may be able to make responsible decisions before viewing or posting anything on the Internet.

I agree with your description of rights and responsibilities. I think it's interesting that the two go hand and hand. I must say that it's sad, however, that though we teach our students to be responsible and respectful of others on the internet, that I'm not sure we can teach them to expect the same from others. If everyone on the planet were required to take this class and there were more rules and regulations regarding the internet, students could reasonably expect that others would treat them respectfully. However, that's unrealistic, and we must teach students to practice maximum safety when dealing with others on the internet.

Totally Agree--Digital Citizenship should be apart of school expectations before students start any projects that involve them working on line.  It would be great to teach all students the importance of the things they post and the things they search.
