In the scientist example you can see how well the scientist can read through the data and explain the measurements as well as why there might be some inconsistencies in measuring volume of water. In the classroom case when students view the data and make a claim their predictions about weight are not supported by the data as they discuss these surprising findings students’ ideas begin to change. The puzzling data was an opportunity for learning and as the students addressed the data they were better able to work through what was happening.
