Standard

To find a standard addressing force and motion, I had to go down to the kindergarten standards as there was no standard appropriated for first grade.

K-PS2-1 Motion and Stability: Forces and interactions

SWBAT Plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

SEP: Planning and Carrying Out Investigations: The video explains how investigations are used by scientists to answer questions and by engineers to test their design. In first grade it will be important to stress letting the investigation leading us to an answer but we have to set up a good investigation first in order to reach that answer.

DCI: Force and Motion: The video talks about Angry Birds when teaching force and motion to our students. Giving them concrete examples and a game that they are familiar with will help them to learn. In the lower grades students should be learning and exposed to what a push or a pull is and how it is related to motion.

CCC: Cause & Effect: Mechanism & Explanation: Cause and effect is something that we talk with our littler students about all the time, not always related to science of course, but with consequences. Students are able to start viewing the relationships between things at work when identifying the cause and effect.
