Facebook groups can not only be used on a grand scale but also on a smaller level.  Creating a local group that your students and their parents can follow is a great way to connect with everyone.  Many parents have problems replying to emails, they don't check them as often as we would like.  Phone calls are usually sent directly to a voicemail.  I've known a lot of more people who are more likely to use their facebook than respond to an email blast.  This of course is only speaking for when you want to touch base with everyone.  It also helps to keep peoples emails and phone numbers more private.
