In the video showing the scientist measuring volume it can be seen that she started a visual comparison and tried to image the space the liquids tock up in the different containers. I notice too that in measuring the volume the scientist focused on the height of the liquid in the container once she ensured that the containers used to measure each liquid were the in size and shape. She also created a standardized tool to measure all three liquids. The students also tried to visualize the space the liquid was taking up in each container but after they were encouraged to make a prediction about which had more volume. Talking about their ideas in small groups helped them to come up with an experiment to test if all the volumes were the same whereas the scientist knew from the beginning how she was going to test the volume. Explaining what they did was a little confusing to put into words however talking about t helped them to put the processes in the correct order even though they knew why they did it and what they found out.
These videos indicated that students should be allowed to try to visualize the outcome by making predictions. The habit of making predictions will become natural for future scientists. Allowing them to collaborate and come up with suggestions to find a solution is possible for them and should be encouraged. Finally, students should be asked to express what they did and not only what they found out as the process is important for further and future exploration.
