I liked the free app Bubble.us. Students can use it for writing assignments. With the free app they get up to 3 mind maps, can save to image or HTML, and can share their mind maps. This works on all platforms; desktops and on mobile devices. Actually isn't an app so don't need to download anything. You just bookmark
http://bubbl.us on your computer or add to home screen on portable device. It is web based and you can share and collaborate with others for group projects and presentations in class.
