I have used PowToon in my classroom and am looking for ways to expand its use with students.
In the past, I have used it for instructional purposes, creating video tutorials to share with students. I found that a short introductory video to the week's word roots were a better overview for students than me standing in front of the classroom and listing them off. Besides providing visuals, the videos allow students to watch them again and again as needed (or pause in between taking notes). I even had one student logging in Sunday nights to preview the week's lesson in order to help her retain the new information.
While I haven't managed this yet, I would like to get students (or groups of students) to create video tutorials as well. Besides helping with my workload, I think it would be powerful for them to hear each other's voices and serve as the source of knowledge (instead of always the teacher). The main setback so far is the time this would take: students would need instruction to learn how to use the site, as well as time to build their video. But if I can plan it well, the time might pay off with the number of great video resources we would produce. Perhaps we could even figure out ways for some of my colleagues to teach/incorporate PowToon's use as well.
