Personalization vs. Differentiation

AndrewShea
I am very familiar with differentiation in the classroom which is much more teacher driven.  I see differentiation as the teacher using a variety of methods and practices and alternative ideas to help students understand material in the best way possible for them, not the teacher.  Successful teachers conduct their lessons in ways that are most beneficial for the student, not what is easiest for the teacher.  Personalized learning was explained as a symphony in the reading, where each student is completing something very individualized and all of that work together creates a successful learning environment.  Personalized learning is much more student centered and driven while differentiation is teacher driven and controlled.
