I recently did a biography background search on Anne Frank. For a speech.
I used google. Which gave me several other sources as to her life's experience, the secret annex, her diary, her relationship with the other 7 people hiding with her in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Google, of course, led me to Wikipedia which I used to complete my research as well as the Encyclopedia Britannica. com.
Wanting a different perspective on Anne Frank, I used Biography.com in reference to her father, Otto Frank and how he managed to survive the Holocaust and how he became the caretaker of her diary.
Usually, one on-line source will take you to another on-line source where you as a research can add to your knowledge, refine what you want to know and even delete material not really relevant to your work.
Teaching students these skills is a "natural" part of the DC process.
