What are some commonalities in the three articles you read and the presentation?
They all say the same thing about it being a great tool for formative assessments. They had a similar way to set up science notebooks.
Are you currently using science notebooks in your classroom? If so, how are you using them? If not, how might you use them?
No, I do not currently teach Science, but I am teaching it next year. I can see myself using Science notebooks daily with vocabulary words, observations, data, reasoning, insights in the science content.
What are two new things that you learned from the readings and/or PowerPoint or something that reinforces what you are already doing with science notebooks in your classroom?
1. Literacy and understanding increase when students do hands-on learning experiences including science notebooks.
2. The brain remembers things when they are in color better than black and white.
What are some advantages and disadvantages you see of using science notebooks?
Advantages: Students remember things better, they reflect on their learning.
Disadvantages: It is time consuming, it can be challenging for lower level students to write.
In what way, if any, do science notebooks help support what we have explored this week with regards to "How Students Learn Science"?
Students can begin every science class by opening their notebooks as a reminder of where they left off in the last science class and that, like scientists, they will keep a record of today's work. Here in the notebook, teachers will find evidence of students' first-hand investigations, not only their observations and measurements but their interpretations of the data, reasoning from the data, ideas and insights into the science content.
