I have previously used Skype in my classroom. It was helpful for more global lessons. For our 'Everyday Heros' lesson I skyped a friend that was in the Army and stationed in another country. The kids were in awe and loved it. She gave them a tour of her bunk and what her day is like. It was a great way to connect something that students may hear about or see to an actual person and situation. There are several platforms you can do this with now like Google Hangouts but for some reason I always go back to Skype!

Real-time communication with experts or people who have a connection to the topic is an excellent idea.  Fortunately, we have a variety of options for making this happen.
