Skype

Rachel Krofta
Teachers in my building have used Skype to communicate with authors, researchers, and other experts that relate to content they're teaching in their classrooms. This tool can be used to connect students with primary sources for research, to conduct interviews, etc.

I have always thought it could be used this way, yet I've never been able to convince the content area teachers in my school to reach out.  I need to take the initiative and set it up when I have an idea.   I have used it for meetings, but would like to use it to connect students with experts who might inspire them.

The caveat here would be that skype used to contact other students can lead to more a social agenda than a research vehicle.  Staying focused on the real reason one is using skype is critical.  Academia should be foremost in the user's process for use.  Otherwise, it becomes time and effort wasted.

I love this idea of using Skype for the students to learn from other classrooms, teachers, authors, or other adults that may specialize in what they are learning!
